Microsoft Word tutorial will help you to learn Word by creating a new document in the form of a letter.
The attempt here is to give you an idea of some of the basic features of Word.
To learn the more advanced features, you can buy books or software tutorials.
For now, let's get started so you can at least create the basic documents.
Start Word
Select "Start" at the left bottom corner of the Desktop screen.
Select "All Programs", "Office", "Microsoft Word".
At the top of the Microsoft Word window, you can see four horizontal bars.
The first row is the Title Bar and shows "Document1 - Microsoft Word" (default).
The second row is the Menu Bar (default).
The third row is the Formatting Toolbar.
The fourth row is the Standard Toolbar.
The fifth row is the Ruler.
If the Formatting Toolbar is missing:
On the Menu Bar, select "View", "Toolbars", "Formatting".
If the Standard Toolbar is missing:
On the Menu Bar, select "View", "Toolbars", "Standard".
If the Ruler is missing:
On the Menu Bar, select "View", "Ruler".
The white area below the Ruler is the Text Area.
The blinking vertical line is the cursor.
Move the mouse into the Text Area and it changes to an I-beam.
When you start to type, the characters appear where the cursor is positioned.
O.K. So much for starting Word. We'll continue the Microsoft Word tutorial by creating a document.
A document could be a letter, outline, invitation, etc.
For the purpose of creating a document, you'll create a template for your future letters.
This is just one type of letter template so if you want you can create your own letter template.
Once you have a letter template, you can use it to create letters.
So let's start creating a document for the first time with the Microsoft Word tutorial.
Create a document (letter template).
The first step would be saving your document (letter template).
Select "File" on the menu bar, the "double v", "save as".
Note: You'll save this document (letter template) on drive "C" for now in your own folder.
In the "Save As" dialog window, select in the "Save in:" field the downword pointing triangle.
Select drive (C:), move your mouse arrow from left to right along the "Save in:" row until you come to the "Create New Folder" button and select it.
Enter your name in the "Name:" field, create another folder, enter "Word" for the new folder, create another folder, enter "letter template".
Enter the file name "letter template.doc" in the "File name:" field.
From this point forward, save your document as often as possible by selecting the "Save" button on the left side of the Formatting Toolbar.
The next step is to create the contents for your document (letter template).
Letterhead
To center the cursor (blinking vertical line), select on the standard toolbar the "center" alignment button.
Type "Your Name" without the quoters, press enter.
Type "Your Address - St., Rd., Pl.", press enter.
Type "Your City, State, Zip Code", press enter.
To get left alignment, select on the standard toolbar the "left alignment" button.
Save your document.
Date
Type Month day, Year, press enter twice.
Save your document.
Recipient's Name and Address.
Type "Recipient's First Name and Last Name", press enter.
Type "Recipient's Street Addresss", press enter.
Type "Recipient's City, State, Zip code", press enter twice.
Save your document.
Salutation.
Type "Dear Mr. (Mrs, Miss, Ms.) Person's First and Last Name, press enter twice.
Save your document.
Body of the Letter.
Type "Body of the letter goes here", press enter 10 times.
Save your document.
Closing.
Type "Sincerely Yours,", press enter four times.
Type "Your First and Last Name"
Save your document.
So in summary, you learned from this Microsoft Word tutorial how to creat a new document called "Letter Template".
In creating this document, you learned about the different toolbars in the Microsoft Word window and some of the features they provided.
You also learned how to save your document and got the sense of saving it more often than less in the Microsoft Word tutorial.
I'm glad you had time to use the Microsoft Word tutorial to learn how to create a Word document.
