Microsoft Access Password - Securing Your Database
The Microsoft Access password is the simpler part of the Microsoft Access security model.
You have limited protection with the database password to restrict which users have access to the database.
The Access password is stored in an unencrypted form which could compromise the security of the database.
Before creating a password, here are some cautions to be aware of.
Cautions
- Don't forget or lose your password because you won't be able to open your database.
- Don't use a Database password if you are going to replicate the database.
- If you have a user-level security defined for your database, you can't use Database password.
The following section will cover how to create, or remove the Microsoft Access password.
Create the Access Password

- Close the database if it is open.
- Make a backup copy of the database.
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Click the down arrow to the right of the Look In box, select the drive and folder where the database is stored and select the database (.mdb).
- Click the down arrow to the right of the Open button,and click Open Exclusive.
- On the Tools menu, select Security and select Set Database Password.
- Type your password in the Password box.

- Use names from 1 to 20 characters which may include letters, numbers, spaces and symbols.
- The characters " [ ] : < > + = ; , . ? *
- Leading spaces
- Control characters (ASCII 10 to ASCII 31}
- Passwords are case sensitive meaning it can distinguish between upper and lower case.
- Type your password again in the Verify box and select OK.
The Microsoft Access password is now set and the next time you open the database the Password Required dialog box will request the password you set.
Notes
- A database password is stored with the database.
- If a database table is linked, the password is stored in the database it is linked to which will allow anyone to see your data.
Remove the Access Password
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Click the down arrow to the right of the Look In box, select the drive and folder where the database is stored and select the database (.mdb).
- In the Password Required dialog box, type the Database password and click OK.
- On the Tools menu, point to Security and click Unset Database Password.
- In the Unset Database Password dialog box, type your current password.
So you have set your Microsoft Access Password and can keep prying eyes away from seeing your data.
Just remember to store your Access password in a safe place so you can always access your data.
