How to Buy a New Computer...

How to buy a new computer can be a challenge if you don't know what to look for.

Friends would ask me:

  • What is the price range?
  • Where should I go?
  • Which computer manufacturer should I look at?
  • Which features should I pay attention to?

My response would be:

  • If he didn't have a computer, I would invite him to come over when he has a chance and I'll show him what to look for.
  • If he has his own computer and has access to the internet, I would ask him to do a search on the internet for "new computer".
  • Select one of the websites that show up.
  • Start looking at the ads.
  • Print some of the ads and note the features.

These are features you should take note:

  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) GHz (Gigahertz) speed.
  • RAM (Random Access Memory) MB (Mega[million]bytes).
  • HDD (Hard Disk Drive) GB (Giga[billion]bytes).
  • DVD (Digital Video Disk)/CD-RW (CDROM Drive-Read Write}
  • Graphics Display Adapter
  • WLAN Wide/Local Area Network
  • Video Monitor 14.1" 17.0".
  • Windows XP
  • Microsoft Works/Microsoft Money
